Sat Nam. Welcome to Carol Macartney Yoga…
I am committed to providing nurturing and loving yoga instruction to the highest standard through a plethora of experience spanning thirty years.
Yoga for me is a way of life, a way to share and a way to serve.
Neem Karoli Baba, known to his followers as Maharajji used to say “Love everyone, feed everyone” I love this!
I hope to love everyone and to feed everyone through my teaching and am deeply grateful to all the teachers and students that I have been blessed to know along this path.
My story (in brief)
My yoga journey began back in the late eighties after spending many years backpacking around the world and seeking new experiences.
I settled in South London for several years and it was whilst there, that I started to feel a yearning for a deeper meaning to life and sought out a meditation class.
This inevitably led to a yoga class and within a year or two I headed off to the island of Ibiza to train as a Hatha yoga teacher, in the style of Sivananda. A style from which to this day, I draw from and deeply respect.
Over the following years and whilst raising a family, I attended many courses and retreats, sampling and studying various styles of yoga, from Scaravelli, Ashtanga, Yin and Vinyasa and was blessed to be taught by some of the world’s most influential and respected yoga teachers.
Looking back I guess one could say that I was hungry for yoga and subconsciously looking for a Guru (not in any religious way)
Some beloved friends then introduced me to my teacher for the last twenty five years, Clive Sheridan. I knew within the first few hours that I was hearing the truth and he has been and will always be my teacher. They say when the student is ready, the Guru appears!
Having shared this, it is also important to share that he would never want the title of “Guru” and there is nothing religious in his teaching of Advaita Vedanta, he simply embodies and transmits the teachings.
I hope in this way to transmit those same teachings to others.
In 2014 my love of dance led me to train as a Shakti Dance teacher (The yoga of dance) with Sara Olivier (Avtar Kaur) which was a wonderful experience and also introduced me to Kundalini yoga and Mantric music. This had an incredible influence on the way I now practice and teach
My personal practice follows a more Bhakti (devotional) way of being these days, which is reflected in my teaching.
As well as the asana, pranayama and meditation, mantra’s play a daily role in my life.
If you too are seeking a higher purpose, looking for a class or session, retreat or workshop that offers a fusion of the above and want to feel safe, nurtured and in the presence of a teacher with over thirty years of experience, with a desire to lead you back to you, then please continue to browse my website
I sincerely hope to be of service to everyone I have the blessing to meet, be it in person or through Zoom.
I look forward to sharing with you soon
Aum Shanti Shanti Shanti
Due to the changing face of the world through Covid, my retreat offerings overseas have inevitably been reduced to a minimum and maybe this is not such a bad thing.
The year of lockdown has been an opportunity for us all to re-evaluate and to consider what is most important in our lives.
One of those considerations for me personally, has been the impact on our planet through world travel.
With this in mind, I have decided to continue to offer a reduced number of retreats abroad (covid permitting and following government guidelines) and also to focus closer to home.
So for the remainder of 2021 I am delighted to announce my “Wild and Free” retreat over the August bank holiday weekend in Wales. The “Icelandic Adventure” in November for those intrepid explorers and later in November a weekend retreat here on home turf at Nettlecombe Farm and finally completing the year at Nettlecombe for my “Magnify your radiance retreat” over New Year.
Whichever retreat you choose will offer a transformative and I’m sure a much needed and awaited time for yourself, whilst being in the company of precious others.
Spending time with our loved ones is of course a priority now more than ever but also taking time out for ourselves is one of the most nurturing and positive things we can do.
A retreat offers us time to reflect, whilst being looked after through the fine balance of the teachings and practice, nutritious food, the majesty of nature, fresh air, silence and stillness, as well as being in the company of your soul family.
Whether you are choosing to immerse in a weekend retreat or diving deeper into a longer, more intensive offering, I can promise you a transformative experience, a deep healing and lots of fun!
May the pure light within you, guide your way on.
Please have a look at the retreats on offer and get in contact with me if you have any questions or would like to book (email@example.com)
Feedback on Carol
"I thoroughly enjoyed Carol's early morning online Sadhana on Zoom. I've joined two ten week courses now, both very different in content and both really inspiring and uplifting.
Carol has such a warm and nurturing vibe and her many years of yoga teaching shine through.
I love the way she brings movement, chanting, breathing exercises and visualisation together with music, it can make you feel like you're in a completely different reality, really transformative. I joined because the current climate (Covid 19 and social distancing) had me feeling disconnected and fearful, I'm so glad I did! The programmes are really good fun, so nurturing and reassuring, I ended up feeling energised and positive, truly recommend it" Elaine 2021
"Thank you so much for these past few mornings...it's been so amazing. This last week I've been buzzing with energy" Catherine 2021
"Yet another great session this morning and yesterday! I'm loving it. It feels like everything you've been learning and teaching for the last twenty or more years all coming together and I'm so grateful to be on the receiving end. I've felt a sense of community and purpose that had previously been lacking during this time, and I wanted to thank you so much for creating this space for everyone and bringing such beautiful teachings and energy" Jane 2021
"I can really feel how much love and soul you've put into this course darling..Thank you" Kate 2020

"Thanks Carol for a great session this morning. It was fabulous on all levels. Doing Yoga with you is making me so much more aware of my body and I'm appreciating it more. I absolutely love the spiritual aspect of your work and all the wonderful music, mantra's and breathing techniques"

It was such a precious and memorable New Year for me and has filled me with joyful expectation and energy for the New Year.
So my thanks and love to you for creating such a special and safe space. I wish you all the joyful unexpected possible and quietly look forward to maybe spending next New Year with you too. x
This was the first time I had attended one of Carol’s retreats in the UK, and I loved it. The blend of assanas, breathing and meditation was perfectly judged, while Carol pours herself into ensuring that the four day retreat leaves everybody feeling renewed and energised. The accommodation, food and organisation was all superb; overall this was a retreat which, for me, launched 2019 in the most positive way.
I started practicing yoga just 4 months before making my first retreat with Carol. She was completely welcoming and brought the group together, accommodating a wide range of experience. The sessions were both balanced between the various aspects of the art and adaptive to the dynamical needs of the group. (The setting was magical and the support facilities, such as the catering, were lovely.) I came away truly enthused and energised; I really enjoyed the whole experience and can’t wait to go back again. Many thanks Carol for opening up a new extra world. Sat nam.

This was my first retreat with Carol, a wonderful warm lady who helped us deepen our understanding of yoga and how it can make us stronger, physically and mentally in coping with on our daily lives. It was a great start to the new year and I would recommend a retreat with Carol to anyone.
“Carol is a spectacular teacher and so great at what she does. She is a talented maestro leading her class into an incredible spiritual and physical journey that pushes the boundaries of everyone’s comfort zone. Her charm and warmth creates an environment where anyone regardless of their level will feel inspired to discover.”

"I’ve been on many of Carol’s yoga retreats – and that’s for a good reason – Carol is a wonderful teacher with a great capacity to spread joy. She’s inspiring, intuitive, creative, nurturing, grounded and has a great sense of fun. No two lessons with Carol are the same, and each lesson is special. On Carol’s retreats I’ve found that there are always people with a wide range of yoga experience – from many years (or even decades!) to none at all, and Carol somehow manages to teach in such a way that everyone leaves each class feeling that it was exactly right for them on that particular day, and leaves the retreat as a stronger, happier people."
