Skíðadalur glacier Iceland

26th – 31st October 2020

Icelandic Adventure

A unique and exceptional adventure to experience the wilderness, in one of the world’s last unspoiled environments, whilst enjoying the delights of a yoga retreat.

The retreat space has been created by Anna, a yoga teacher, who’s family have both owned and farmed the land for generations, living by the natural cycles of the seasons, gathering and harvesting berries and mushrooms and assisting the community in bringing the sheep down from the mountains at the end of each Summer. Situated on a remote ancient sheep farm, on Iceland’s northern Troll peninsula nestled at the foot of the Skíðadalur glacier.

Cabins in the Snow

The accommodation consists of four traditional Icelandic cabins, split into two apartments, each containing two bedrooms, set against the backdrop of the wild mountainside and in the shadow of the glacier.
Each apartment has a double bed upstairs under the eaves and a large single bed downstairs.
The two rooms share a bathroom, which is off the downstairs bedroom.
There is space for up to sixteen guests.
Non yoga partners welcome, please enquire for details.

Yoga Shala
The Yoga Shala is spacious and well equipped and has large windows in the gable end with views reaching up the valley towards the glacier.

A large, rustic, indoor space with comfortable cosy seating and big wood burning stoves. A beautifully appointed sauna and dedicated massage treatment room. There is also a hot tub for a luxurious soak, whilst star gazing or even seeing the northern lights!!

‘I have rarely been so moved by a location. The minute I arrived I felt my consciousness expand as I tuned in to the complete silence, gazed at the wild mountainsides and breathed in the pure prana. I actually was moved to tears as I felt my heart expand with joy. An amazing and deeply touching experience.’ Jane (Huzur Vadisi Yoga Retreats)

There are many activities locally, which can be booked in advance, although it is recommended not to undertake too many off-site activities, as it is also important just to relax and enjoy the practice, take in the beautiful scenery, experience the Northern Lights, walk, have a sauna and rest in the natural great peace. The retreat programme will create perfect balance between doing and being.
One can walk freely in the environs of the valley or choose to have a guided walk of up to 2 – 3 hours.

Recommended Day Trips
Myvatn Day Trip & Geothermal Baths. This trip is about a 1.5hr drive one way and beautiful. We will stop on the way to see Godafoss Waterfall. After that we will spend time exploring the volcanic landscape, steam vents, mud pools and walk amongst the lava fields finishing off with a long hot soak in the Geothermal pools.

Whale Watching
The whale watching trip is truly a fun sea adventure you won’t forget. The whale watching takes place in the picturesque landscape of Eyjafjordur followed by sea fishing inside the majestic mountains of Tröllaskagi, just short of the Arctic Circle. We end the day with a barbecue of the freshly caught fish.
In Dalvík, you have an exceptionally good chance to encounter the great humpback whale and often we spot white-beaked dolphins, minke whales, the small harbor porpoises and sometimes even the majestic blue whale, fin whales or killer whales.

Walk Through Travel Suggestion…..
Because it is necessary to take a domestic flight from Reykjavik to Akureyri and then back again on the return, and given the unpredictable weather patterns in Iceland, it is essential that participants on this retreat, arrive a day early (Sunday 25th) and spend a night in Reykjavik. This allows us to take the 11.05 flight on Monday 26th to Akureyri together as a group and then depart from the retreat on the 31st to take the 13.55 flight from Akureyri back to Reykjavik and again spend the night before departing on the 1st November from Reykjavik back to your destination.

From London or your departure airport, take a flight to Reykjavik (Keflavic International)
If you fly Icelandic Air you can purchase a ticket from the cabin crew for a bus to Reykjavik. If you are flying with BA, you can purchase a bus ticket at the airport. The journey from the airport to Reykjavik is around 45 minutes. It is then a short walk from the bus station into the City Centre or there are taxis. Please note that the Icelandic people are really friendly and helpful and all speak perfect English.

There are lots of Airbnb places and Hotels on for around £60 – £70 per night and they are all pretty good standard.Look for places in the centre of town.
Reykjavik is so small, it’s easy for everyone to book their own accommodation and then meet up.
On the morning of the 26th we will then need to take a short taxi ride to the domestic Reykjavik airport to catch the 11.05 flight to Akureyri. The flight is around 45 minutes.

We will then be collected on the transfer to the venue, which is also around 45 minutes.
Please note that the transfer from the domestic airport in Akureyri to the venue will cost around £48 per person return (this is based on 16 people sharing, if there are less, then the cost will be slightly more)
When booking your flights, please be aware that it is absolutely essential that your return flight from Akureyri back to Reykjavik on Saturday 31st October is at 13.55, this will then allow the whole group to travel together and there are no exceptions!!!!
